Worst Sotomayor Headline Ever

Monday, July 13, 2009
By Robert Clarke

Clicking through the news feeds today, I spotted what may very well be the worst Sotomayor headline ever. The confirmation process will still go through the motions, however, so there may be some more gems on the way.

Drumroll please:

Dems Praise Sotomayor; GOP Fears Her Empathy

Congratulations to ABC News! Well done! As you can see, they changed the title of the headline later in the day, but the original headline pretty much encapsulates everything that a majority of journalists feel about the proceeding.

Let’s break this down and exegete the headline a little bit.

Identifiers: “Dems” vs. “GOP”.

Dems is shorthand for a mainstream journalists’ favorite political party, the Communists. Though they hide under the guise of the term “Democrats”, they’re really government-brand Marxists.  Dems is the word choice for this headline, because it’s a catchy nickname that they like to call their friends.

GOP is shorthand for a mainstream journalists’ worst enemy, which is anyone who disagrees with them.  It stands for Grand Old Party, which uses the word “Old” in it, so everyone will know that anyone opposed to Sotomayor is old, and therefore racist. Though they hide under the guise of the term “Republicans”, they’re really corporate-brand Marxists.

Verb Choice: “Praise” vs. “Fears”

Verb choice is very important in crafting a wildly biased headline.  “Praise” signifies that the nominee is worthy of it, and deserves it from not only the Senators questioning the nominee, but also from the broadcast journalist covering the confirmation hearings.  Here’s an example you can use in your script tomorrow, if you haven’t already:  “Just look at the smile on Judge Sotomayor’s face, as the Dems praised her for her judicial insight and wisdom!”

“Fears”, on the other hand, is a verb that signifies cowardice, one of the worst things that a man can be branded with.  Suggested for broadcast scripts as the hearings continue:  “Look at how afraid the GOP members are of this nominee!  Did I mention they’re old?  Their palms are sweating just from being in the same room with such an accomplished woman!”

Object: “Sotomayor” vs. “Her Empathy”

The Dems praise Sotomayor!  They don’t need any other reason to praise her than her name, because it signifies her race, which is the only thing important to them in these confirmation hearings, besides making sure that they use all their microphone time (hey, some of them have to get re-elected next year).

The GOP fears “her empathy”.  Not to be confused with “her majesty”, which is a phrase that broadcast journalists are saving for her swearing-in ceremony.  Sotomayor has “empathy”, and therefore she’ll make a good judge once she’s in office, in the eyes of the press.  The GOP fears her empathy, because they’re old, racist, and have no feelings.

That’s a rundown of the worst Sotomayor headline ever.  Personally, I could care less how the confirmation hearings come down.  I fully expect the final vote to be 98-0 when it’s all said and done, because the Godless Republican Party has no spine for a battle on this one, or anything else for that matter.  My whole point is that the bias that’s exhibited on a daily basis by the mainstream press is becoming insufferable for those of us who take the tradecraft of journalism seriously.
